Sugar-Fu

I should point out that I work here: http://www.pinkcakebox.com

This was a sample or “dummy” cake that I made to replace a shop favorite. I made the styrofoam base, then covered it in sugar paste. All flowers, decoration, etc are also sugar. Yes, we do this sort of thing in actual cake. All. The. Time.

Hand painted, royal icing run-in cookies: My boss asked me about doing some illustrative items and tonight I had a little spare time at the end of my shift. It was fun, though I have doubts about it being a commercially viable product. But any time I get to draw….

This was this week’s showpiece. So no, this wasn’t for an order, just to replace some of the older cakes in the window of the shop. I did all the sugar work and most of the design with some input from my boss. The figures on top were based on two sets I made in the fall. They are HUGE. Think Barbie Doll sized. I think they have a nice graffiti look to the style of the figures which is interesting in contrast to the etherial color of the flowers and all those crazy scales. More fun at the day job!

Black Rose wedding cake: Please don’t judge my actual skills here — while I did decorate the cake and make the black roses, I did not fill or fondant it (I know, it’s horribly done) or pick the design. I think the final product was interesting though, and lead to an obsession with black sugar roses…
